The Denton County Historical Commission
invites everyone to the 200th
birthday of John B. Denton, the pioneer preacher, lawyer and
ranger captain for whom Denton County and the City of Denton is named.
The three-day event begins
Friday, July 28, 2006, and
runs through the following Sunday. A parade, historical exhibits,
educational period re-enactors, music and other events are planned.
In addition to being a fitting tribute to
the man for whom the county is named, celebrating the bicentennial of
the birth of John B. Denton is a golden opportunity to show off the
Denton County area we’re all so proud of.
The event is being funded by individual and
corporate donations from citizens and area institutions.
Admission is free to all events.
On Friday, County Judge Mary Horn will be
joined by other national, state and area officials to officially
proclaim John B. Denton Days, followed by a special birthday cake
celebration on the grounds of the historic 110-year-old Denton County
Courthouse on the Square.
A parade through the historic downtown area
that will take viewers 200 years back in time begins at 10 a.m.
Saturday. We hope John B. Denton descendants will be able to participate
as special guests of honor in the parade. Also planned for Saturday are
re-enactors on the Courthouse lawn, historical displays, heritage music
all day and a quilt show, capped off with a concert by legendary Texas
singer-songwriter Billy Joe Shaver.
