September 5, 2000

Be it remembered that Commissioners Court of Denton County, Texas, met on this the 5th day of September, 2000, with Judge Kirk Wilson presiding. Commissioners Jim Carter, Scott Armey, Jeff Krueger and Sandy Jacobs were present, along with deputy clerk Kathleen Bransford, when the following proceedings were had, to wit:

Court opened with an Invocation by Pastor Charlotte Nabors of the First Christian Church, Denton, Texas, and was followed by the Pledges of Allegiance to the American Flag and the Texas Flag led by Chief Jimmie Van of the Mayhill-Cooper Creek Volunteer Fire Department.

Pastor Nabors: Oh, Holy Lord, we are in special need of Your presence and Your energy today. The rhythm of our schedules has changed and we're grateful for that. We're grateful for tasks that give life meaning, for labor that serves others, and we're grateful for respite from it, for the renewing that comes in recreation and rest and time with loved ones. But now, the rhythm of our schedules has changed and we seek Your help that we may focus on the business of this day. Especially do we ask Your guidance and wisdom for these who sit on the County Commissioners Court. There are difficult decisions ahead. Grant Your wisdom, we pray. More than that, open ears to hear the larger picture. Open hearts to understanding. Prick consciences so that decisions are made with integrity and free of personal agenda. Oh, God, You are Creator of heaven and earth and You know that in this area we are suffering. The harsh drought we are now experiencing has hurt many and strained us all. Even so, it has made us more conscience of the precious resources You have given us, resources of water and earth and the food it produces and animals and human resources. Oh, Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. These resources have been strained. By Your grace and mercy send the rains and the cooling necessary to take care of these, Your gifts to us. And teach us ways to do our part. Great God, we know that mercy and justice come in many forms, some dramatic but most quiet: in many ways, through individuals, through churches, temples, synagogues, civic groups and through Your local elected leadership. In this time of prayer, we ask especially that You use these gathered in this Court as instruments of Your work for the sake of justice and mercy and in Your holy name, we pray. Amen.
