February 8, 2000
Be it remembered that Commissioners Court of Denton County, Texas, met on this the 8th day of February, 2000, with Judge Kirk Wilson presiding. Commissioners Sandy Jacobs, Jim Carter, Jeff Krueger and Scott Armey were present along with deputy clerk Kathleen Bransford, when the following proceedings were had, to wit:
Court opened with an invocation by Pastor Stephen Nilneier of the First Presbyterian Church of Denton, followed by the Pledges of Allegiance to the American Flag and the Texas Flag led by Hank Scheible, Denton County Veterans Service Officer.
Pastor Nilneier: Let us pray. All mighty God and Holy God, You rule the ways of men and women and You govern every earthly government. Work with those who work for peace, we ask, and make every person here today an agent of your reconciliation and every representative here an ambassador of hope. Because we, too often, live under the illusion that places like this are citadels of power and forget that there is no earthly power that's granted unless it comes from You. But, in Your providence we are gathered here today to work that will be in very definitive fashion, say about who we are. Lord, we ask and we pray that Your peace and Your goodwill might be here, despite the agendas, despite the temptation for personal gain. We ask and we pray that the words that were spoke by the prophets and demonstrated in the person of Your Son, Jesus Christ, might be very much alive, and that You demand justice and mercy and not simply the worship that we participate in on weekends. May this court and this session today be the place where people will experience Your love and compassion, if such a thing were possible, dare we think. May Your spirit dwell in this place, Oh Lord, and may we find and experience humility instead of hubris. May we find that there are those who seek goodwill instead of good fortune. Do we dare believe and hope that such a thing would happen? All things are possible in You. We ask and we pray that You will guide these men and women, who dedicate their lives and were brought here today for purposes that often go beyond our own purview. Thank You for bringing us here. Thank You for each and every person. We pray for their children, we pray for their families, we pray for the social welfare that will either be enhanced today or be at a detriment. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
